Surface Tension - "Path" Gallery Installation
|
| Photographic thermal transfers on fabric, jarrah timber screens Exhibited in Path, Nexus Gallery 1999. Curated by Toby Richardson. Surface tension is a 3-screen piece with photographs on fabric. The work explores the notion of breathing water, the translucent fabric membrane a metaphor for the water surface, the figure traversing the spaces both above and beneath this liquid plane. The screen is, in fact, a spacial divider, also both separator and mediator between air and water. The figure lowers into liquid depths, the surface tension creating a protective membrane between skin and water. The face punctures the delicate screen beyond the comfort zone, releasing the surface tension to initiate seepage. The water pools into an open mouth, mid breath, the air-breathing psyche screening its flow. Breathe. Surface Tension is an extension of notions developed in the photographic web narrative DNA Doll, a sci-fi drama involving the discovery of an aquatically modified human. Surface Tension is an aesthetic tangent, anticipating a series of experimental works examining notions of Frankenstinian Biotechnology in genetic adaptions for future living. |
