| Probably the greatest dancer of all time, Vaslav Nijinsky is known as "the god of the Dance". NIJINSKY is based on his diary Cahiers, written in 1919 during an extremely traumatic period of his life. Nijinsky had fled to St Moritz in an attempt to escape his overbearing mentor, Diaghilev. Even though he was in the grip of madness, he was able to lucidly capture his feelings in his writing. This makes Cahiers a rare and precious document.. In the tradition of Paul Cox's Vincent - the Life and Death of Vincent Van Gogh, NIJINSKY is a dramatise documentary featuring Derek Jacobi as the voice of Nijinsky. The film utilises existing images from the Ballets Russes, and re-creates famous ballets and salient moments of his life. It celebrates Nijinsky the dancer - and also explores the mind of a genius on the outer verge of reason. |
